Introducing Rival Plumbing

By OC Team

At Okanagan Contractors, we believe a good client/contractor fit is built on relationships. This is why we ask every one of the participating contractors questions about who they are and what they are about.

Our introduction blogs are here to help get that relationship started.

This is a Q&A article from our new partner Spencer Leung of Rival Plumbing.

Q: Tell us about you and your company.

Rival Plumbing has been in business since 2021, primarily operating within Kelowna and West Kelowna – but we have taken jobs as far as Salmon Arm and Osoyoos. Over our short span in business, we have developed amazing relationships with hundreds of homeowners and dozens of new construction, commercial & renovation contractors who trust our work, our word and our prices. We also serve many realtors, and property managers and currently service over 18 condominium buildings and small businesses throughout Kelowna. I believe our strong business relationships and our rapid growth reflects how much we care about our clients and the work we do.

My name is Spencer Leung, sole owner of Rival Plumbing. Originally from Coquitlam, I have been plumbing in Kelowna since 2010. I think the love I have for the Okanagan has influenced the care I put into my business and my clients. I believe in our mission at Okanagan Contractors and want to continue to foster good relationships and positive outcomes between clients and all trades. I look forward to hearing from you and hope to earn your trust and business.

Q: What do you love or get you excited about in your industry?

There’s so much I love about the industry. I can’t say I was always a fan of construction and trades. After high school graduation, I took college courses in business and transitioned into the plumbing trade. During my first year as a plumber, I worked on incredible new home builds, renovated underutilized space into masterpieces and detailed projects to the finished stage. To this day, this is something I’m proud of. There is something truly special about looking back at your work, admitting you gave it your all and then sharing that finished project with your clients, knowing they’ll experience enjoying it for years to come. I am very fortunate to be able to be part of the growth of this city.

Q: Why did you start your business?

At first, I thought it was the freedom of being your own boss; the ability to make my own schedule and run my own business. However, as my fellow contractors will agree, freedom is the last thing you have when you start your own business. It wasn’t about the pursuit of freedom, but the ability to develop my own clientele and projects. At the end of many 16-hour days in my first year in business, I found myself coming home more tired, but also happier and more fulfilled than when I was an employee. Fast forward three years, my days are spent organizing, planning, and meeting with our clients – and I still get to put on the tool belt.

Q: What are your favourite types of projects?

I honestly enjoy it all, whether it’s a monster $3 million custom build on the lake, a residential/commercial renovation or simply changing a homeowner’s hot water tank. Our team enjoys the diversity in jobs, which keeps everyone motivated. No matter how big or small a project, my team guarantees our best work and walks away with that sense of satisfaction, fulfillment, and pride I spoke about earlier. On our social media accounts, we have shared several projects including installing 2000 feet of radiant heat piping; the finished project of a year-long build; and a two-week bathroom remodel.

Q: What is one of the biggest misconceptions in your industry?

I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that hiring a plumber will substantially exceed your budget. We encourage homeowners to do their research on a company’s history and reputation. Okanagan Contractors will be that source for you.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to a homeowner?

Know who you’re hiring. Know their history and reputation. Know their quality of craftsmanship. Are they reliable? How long have they been around? Are they certified, licensed, and insured? Looking into these simple things can save you in more ways than one.

Q: How are you different from your competitors?

I truly believe it’s our quality of work and care for our clients that sets us apart. We pride ourselves on the work we do and want to walk away knowing our clients are satisfied. We are grateful for the opportunity to make your home your dream space and respect that your money deserves to be well spent. Just like anything in life, quality tops all. Our goal is to install that quality into your home, done right the first time so you can enjoy it as intended.

Q: What’s your favourite hobby outside of work?

I am blessed to have a large family and close friends with whom I spend a great deal of my time, either on the lake surfing, on the golf course, or around a campfire. I am also passionate about fitness and enjoy snowboarding in the winter.
